Golf Tips To Help Your Golf Game
Yes, golf clubs are the tools of the game but there's much more to playing good golf than just choosing the right golf clubs.
And sometimes our game just needs a quick tip to get it back on track. This may or may not have anything to do with your golf equipment.
Here's a list of the top Golf Tips I've learned over the years. These are not long explanations but just short swing thoughts that you might want to pull out of the bag when things are not going well on the course or on the range.
Golf Swing Thoughts and Golf Tips
Keep Your Head Steady
Jack Nicklaus calls this the "bedrock fundamental of golf." This is not about "keeping your head down" or "keeping your eye on the ball". This is about keeping your head in one place throughout the swing (at least until you hit the ball). Jack's teacher Jack Grout, used to grab young Jack by the hair during the swing to make sure he "got it" and knew what a steady head felt like.
On The Golf Course Concentrate On The Four T's
The range is the place for "backswing" thoughts and technique. On the course it's time to focus on "the game." And the game is about focusing on the target. If you focus on just the Four T's - Target, Tension, Tempo, and Trust, I bet you'll play a lot better.
Don't Forget Your Swing Trigger
Every good golfer has a swing trigger. That's the sometime inperceptable move they make to start the swing. It reduces tension and helps you keep a smooth tempo through the swing. Gary player has a little kick of the right knee and Jack Nicklaus has a "forward press" with his hands. Sometimes it's hard to see on modern golfers but I bet if you give it a try it will help your tempo and your tension level.
Watch Your "Transition"
In order to have your hands and arms and body "insync" you must make sure that the transition from your backswing to your downswing is smooth. If your hands and arms race ahead your timing will be off and your ball can go anywhere.
Hit Down To Make The Ball Go Up
With your irons beginners often try to lift the ball up in the air. This often makes them hit behind the ball. Crisp iron contact comes from hitting the ball with a decending blow and letting the loft of the club get the ball in the air. A good check is to focus on taking a divot after the ball. Watching the front of the ball also helps.
Play Within Yourself
Choose shots that you know you can succeed at over 80% of the time. Choosing risky shots creates tension in your swing and often ruins your tempo and your shot is doomed before you even swing.
Stay Connected
To keep your arms and body in sync swing as if you had a headcover in each armpit. Imagine that when you swing they don't fall out. This is also a great drill to do on the range with actual head covers.
Maintain Constant Grip Pressure
When you grip the golf club be sure it is not too tight. You want to be able to feel the clubhead throughout the swing. Be sure you maintain that same pressure during the swing and one hand (especially the right) or certain fingers don't grab the club.
Swing Through The Ball
Instead of hitting "at the ball," visualize the clubhead moving through the ball towards the target. Think of your clubhead following a line 6 inches behind and 6 inches in front of the ball on a line with the target.
