The most important golf tip you’ll ever get will not be about your swing. It will not be about the latest equipment. It won’t even be about getting your clubs fit correctly. It will be about the number one factor that effects how well you play…your attitude. Everyone agrees that golf is a mental game. But vary few really think about what that means. Everyone would rather try that new driver or work on that hot new swing technique. The fact that the average handicap for all golfers has not gone down in the last 20 years tells me that the newest equipment and the scientific research and launch monitors evaluating our swings has not done a thing to improve our games. What if I told you could take five strokes off your score in your next round without changing a thing about your equipment or your swing? It really is possible. Here’s how… Setting Your Expectations Part of the allure of golf is the challenge. It is a very difficult game but that difficulty draws many people to the game. Especially if you have been successful in other sports, or other parts of life. But one of the secrets of playing good golf is playing within yourself. If you choose shots that are well within your capability it will take a lot of pressure off your game and remove tension from that swing. In other words… make the game as simple as possible. Beginners: Make Your Own Par

Someone decided that on a typical par 3 it should take one shot to get to the green, on a Par 4 two shots, and a Par 5 three shots. Is this helpful to a beginner? Probably not. Beginners should totally ignore this convention and make their own par. Trying to hit greens in regulation causes beginners more bad shots than anything in golf. It encourages beginners, and even intermediate golfers, to try shots that deep down they know they could never pull off. Letting go of this arbitrary, unrealistic expectation will increase everyone’s enjoyment of golf and improve their scores at the same time. If you think about it…getting to a 400 yard par 4 in 2 shots is pretty difficult. It requires a drive of at least 200 to 220 yards and a second shot of 180 to 200 yards with accuracy. What percentage of beginner golfers can hit two 200 yard shots relatively straight with any sort of consistency. The honest answer is probably not many. In fact, many single digit handicap golfers can’t do it consistently. Now how about three 140 yard shots. Now that’s within the realm of possibility. That’s just three 6 or 7 irons for most male beginners (the women’s game is another matter altogether). Three shots to get on, two putts, that’s a five. A bogey on probably one of the more difficult holes. Do that on every hole you shoot 90. Even if you don’t you’re bound to break 100. A Golfer Is As A Golfer Does

Did you ever stop to think about what the difference is between a good golfer and a … well…not so good golfer. I’m not talking about the obvious differences like how they hit the ball, or how they score, or even talent, but just the things they do. I guess you could call them the ‘habits of successful golfers’. I play with all kinds of golfers. They run the gamut from beginners to single digit handicaps. It’s easy to tell which is which…and I don’t even have to see them swing. The guy that shows up 5 minutes before the tee time, coffee in one hand, tying his shoes on the tee, no warm up, no practice putts…well you know which one he is. He’s the one that wonders why he’s 6 over after 3 holes and still struggling to find his game at the turn. Golf is a game that requires hand eye coordination. It’s not easy hitting that little white ball. Sure natural ability helps. We can’t control what God has given us. But there are many things we can control and many things we can do to maximize the natural skills we do have. Let’s take a look at some of those things you can do…some of those habits. Warm Up Every good player I know makes sure they are ready to play. That means arriving at least an hour before their tee time. They go to the range, stretch their muscles and hit some warm-up shots. The Four T’s of Golf

When you are on the practice range there are many things that you can think about and work on. Many of these will be swing technique and “back swing” thoughts. But when you get on the course it’s time to put those thoughts away and play the game of golf. Now it’s time to think “forward swing” thoughts and focus on putting the ball in the hole in the fewest strokes. So how do you bring your a game to the course. What are the things you should concentrate on. Here’s my suggestion on a unique way to keep your game together and your mind in the right place. Think about the Four T’s of Golf-Target, Tension, Tempo and Trust. Let’s take a closer look at each. Target Golf is a target game, not a “swing right” game — especially on the course. If you keep your target as your main focus, and target never leaves your mind throughout the shot, both your good and your bad shots will be better. A one-pointed focus on the target will give your body the message of what needs to be accomplished. Tension Tension is the number one swing wrecker especially on the course. On the range the consequences are minimal so naturally tension is less. On the course we are facing a much more difficult challenge. The lower your tension level the better your shots will be…it’s that simple. You can reduce your tension level by deep breathing and thinking slowly.
